Amazon Autos: how it works, and a better way to buy a 4x4

Amazon lists dealers’ cars with the price up front and lets you finish most of the paperwork online. The car still comes from a dealer’s lot. Here’s what we do that Amazon doesn’t.

Amazon fixes the paperwork. We fix the drive, the build and the price.

How it works

Amazon lists it, a dealer sells it, you pick it up

Amazon Autos is Amazon’s car storefront at amazon.com/autos. Dealers list their inventory on it; Amazon is not the seller. New-car sales began in December 2024 in more than 130 cities, and used and certified pre-owned vehicles were added in August 2025, starting in Los Angeles and spreading by city.

  1. Step 1

    Search near you

Filter by new, used or certified pre-owned, body style, make and fuel type. Used listings are limited to dealers within about 75 miles of you. Each listing shows the price, the dealer, its distance and the return policy that applies.

  2. Step 2

    Choose finance, lease or cash

Amazon shows rates from its lending partners, Chase, Santander and Wells Fargo among them, so you can compare offers side by side. You can also pay in full.

  3. Step 3

    Submit a credit application online

The application and much of the paperwork happen on Amazon, not at a desk. A trade-in offer can be arranged online too and applied to any car on the site.

  4. Step 4

Test drive and wrap up at the dealership

You drive the car at the store, sign the final documents there and settle anything the listing did not cover.

  5. Step 5

    Pick it up

The car is handed over at the dealership. Amazon does not deliver cars to your door.

The price

What the listing price includes, and what it doesn’t

Amazon calls it transparent pricing: the number on the listing is what the dealer is selling the car for, and the dealer fee is printed right under it. Government fees and taxes are extra, and manufacturer rebates may apply at the store.

The dealer fee
Shown on every listing. When we looked from the Outer Banks, listings carried dealer fees of $995 to $1,194 depending on the store, stated as excluded from the price.
Returns and warranty
Used cars carry a 3-day, 300-mile return window and a minimum 30-day, 1,000-mile limited warranty. Certified pre-owned listings we saw carried a 14-day, 1,000-mile return policy. New cars are sold the normal way.
Which brands
Amazon started with Hyundai in December 2024 and by 2026 listed new vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Jeep, Dodge and Ram, with more brands being added; Ford is not on its new-car list. What you see depends on which dealers near you have joined. From Kill Devil Hills in November 2026 the nearest new listings were Hyundais in Hampton Roads, about 60 miles away, and the used listings came from Ford dealers there.
Negotiating
The listing price is the dealer’s price. Amazon does not say it is negotiable and does not say it is fixed; the dealer still runs the desk.
Where it stops
Amazon Autos sells what dealers have in stock. A vehicle factory-ordered in your color and options is not something Amazon lists.

Is it worth it?

If a participating dealer near you has the car you want in stock, yes: the price and the dealer fee are in the open, the paperwork is online and the return policy on used cars is real. For a new 4x4 built the way you want it, Amazon has nothing to sell you: it lists what is on the lot, and the car still comes off that lot after a test drive from the store.

The alternative

Same idea, no membership, and half a day in the vehicle instead of a test drive

OffRoad.guide is for the 4x4 Amazon doesn’t list: the one you order built your way, after half a day in it. One dealer per brand, one No-Haggle Price set before you book, in writing, and the vehicle delivered to your door. The program is still in the works; every vehicle will come from a participating dealer, a store that agrees to one no-haggle, out-the-door price for our drivers before it joins.

What qualifies you
Not an account or a listing, and nothing to join. Half a day in the vehicle on the Carova 4x4 beach north of Corolla, North Carolina, with your family along and no salesperson. That is the whole membership, and it costs $325.
When you see the price
By email, on a numbered certificate: sticker, the dealer’s discount, factory cash, the No-Haggle Price, any delivery fee and the out-the-door total. Not a number you find out at the desk.
Where you buy
Remotely, from the dealer on your certificate. Within its area it delivers to your door; farther away, a dealer near you hands over the keys for a flat fee that is printed on the certificate.
What is the same
One dealer, one named person, one price, no negotiating, no pressure, and nobody calls unless you ask. The dealer still sells the financing and the add-ons if you want them; you can still say no.
